Leo Award Gala 2005

An exclusive report by Kathrin Teschner (www.stargate-reise.de) and Susanne Schwager (www.stargate-planet.de)

The seventh leo award gala took place on Saturday, May 28th, 2005, at the Westin Bay Shore Hotel in downtown Vancouver. When Kathrin and I picked up the tickets at the event one office (who organize the event), we were told that the guests were supposed to show up at the hotel between five and seven o’clock PM. I really could not believe that we would have the chance to witness this event, until I had the tickets in my hands. Before, I thought, only celebs and people from the vancouver film industry were allowed to go there – but this did prove wrong. ;)

For the first time, the organizers of the event decided to have a red carpet in front of the hotel. A camera team of Shaw TV (local Vancouver tv station) was present and Fiona Forbes and Michael Eckford did interview celebrities on the red carpet. This "urban rush" special will air on June 3rd and June 4th, 2005. Kathrin and I did not enter the hotel via the red carpet - we did not want to blow our cover. ;) Instead we used the normal entrance of the hotel and the event volunteers directed us to a table, where a nice lady checked our tickets and handed us a brochure with info on the categories and the nominations, after making sure that we were not "nominees".
We were told that we were supposed to sit at table # 59. No free choice of seating on a first come, first sit basis, like at the ceremony the night before. The dinner was supposed to start at 7:00 PM and the gala guests had time to stroll around in the lobby in front of the grand ball room of the hotel; there was a silent auction and a fashion exhibition. Sparkling wine was offered for free - all other drinks had to be paid for. A photographer took 20 CAD for a photo with the Leo Award. As we were waiting in the lobby for the ballroom doors to open, we discovered several SG-1 celebs among the gala guests: John Smith (in beige pants and a white shirt) with his wife Lynn (wearing a long dark dress), Paul McGillion, chatting with Gary Jones, and Richard Side, the gala host - later we discovered David Hewlett.

At 6:45 PM the ball room door opened. The stage was at the opposite side of the room - along the long wall. There were four rows of round tables in front of the stage - with space for 10 people each. At table 59, we had the pleasure to meet the people of the production company of the animated movie "Popeye’s Voyage: the quest for Pappy" (who were nominated in two categories, but unfortunately did not win). At the table in front of us, we discovered Roman Danylo and Richard Side - among others. The stargate people were sitting at the opposite side of the room.

The menu: Fish pate on mushrooms, halibut with mashed potatoes and stewed vegetable of the season, chocolate mousse (four-colored) in pie shape with strawberry. Beverages: mineral water, chardonnay or merlot, coffee were included - all other beverages had to be purchased in the lobby in front of the ballroom.

Between fish pate and halibut, they gave an award to a winner who could not be present the evening before. Then Richard Side opened the gala ceremony as host and in a very funny comedy special, Richard Side and Gary Jones explained the voting system of the leo awards - by doing a voice over on an old commercial for tvs and washing machines. Then the award ceremony began. In total, 27 awards were presented that evening. Sometimes the nominees were only mentioned; sometimes, short trailers were displayed on the two big video screens on the left and right hand side of the stage.

Presenters were: Amanda Tapping, Gary Jones, JR Bourne, Colin Cunningham, Roman Danylo, Ellie Harvie, Ian Tracey, Zak Santiago, Paul McGillion, Fiona Forbes and Michael Eckford. The presenters were rewarded with a gift bag, worth 2000 CAD.

In the category "comedy", the canadian series "corner gas" was very successful.

From the stargate point of view only amanda tapping was successful. In her speech, she thanked the producers for nine wonderful years of stargate and the chance to be on mission again as a breath feeding colonel.

At 11 PM the ceremony was over. Kathrin and I had a sky train to catch, so we hurried to get our coats. In the lobby, Ian Tracey passed by us and gave us a nod and a smile. I am wondering who he thought we were. ;)
