02nd September 2003 - Excursion to Victoria At 9o´clock we were invited to the breakfast by Hentze family. Mmm, it was tasty! Then we started to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. We parked our car in the underground parking garage of the Hotel Empress (insider tip!). So, having disposed of our car we could start our city trip. We wanted to start our tour with the museum. A little bit of education, culture and intellectual. stimulus for us. In the BC-Museum we found every floor had a different theme. On the 1st floor - Dinosaurs, on the 2nd floor - the First Nation Gallery, on the 3rd floor - Heritage. You might not believe me, but in the 1st floor we met a joung palaeontologist, who had a little something of Blair Sandberg. The First Nation Gallery was really superb. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take fotos. After that we strolled around the city of Victoria. In between a short break in a Starbucks. And again we got into a conversation with somebody about this and that. The way back took us through Duncon, the City of Totems, and Ladysmith up to Cassidy. |

03rd September 2003 - Excursion to Tofino for some Whale watching On this day we had planed a very big trip across the Island. First we had to drive 140km to Tofino, because we wanted to go whale watching. In the end it was a 3.5hour drive. The time for the whale watching at 11 o´clock had already passed and so we had to wait until 2.30 in the afternoon. We bought a ticket for this time and than did a "sightseeing" tour of the very small town Tofino. Finally the time came. While "squeezing" into the orange water conservation suit we took up contact with 2 young guys from Tauber Bishofsheim who had booked for the same boat. The world is really so small. The whale watching began. We drove with a rubber dinghy out of the Pacific (my favorite ocean) and now the first order of the day was: open your eyes wide. After many views of a grey whale we had to drive further to a sandbank with seals and than, after a short high speed trip, not good for people with a prolapsed intervertebral disc, back to Tofino harbor. On our way back we came to the Long Beach. Finally we found the boardwalk with a really to the point name, "Rain Forest". Really it is a rain forest on the westside of Vancouver Island and also very often on the west coast of British Columbia. Unfortunately it was a little bit late on this day. You should really visit the boardwalk in the middle of the day. We arrived at our accommodation at 10.30 that evening. |

04th September 2003 - Excursion to Mount Washington First we had to come to terms with the excursion of the day before. That´s why we decided to treat ourselves to a longer sleep on this day. So we started on our excursion to Mount Washington a little bit later. The Mount Washington is the highest mountain on Vancouver Island. We had a fantastic view already on the drive there. The ride up with the cable railway was in our opinion a little bit too expensive (10$ Can) and that´s why we decided to hike and climb across the footpath. Crazy chickens! Some minutes later we lost our way and found ourselves on the mountain bike path. For me as an active biker it was not the worst mistake to make. After returning from the trip on the bike path all sorts of people who had seen us from the gondolas wnated to talk to us about our hike and most of all the biker themselves. |
